Myth Characters in Romeo and Juliet

While reading through Romeo and Juliet I noticed that Shakespeare used references to Mythological characters. There was one act that the two lovers were telling each other how deeply they loved each other and they were comparing to the goddess of love Venus and her son Cupid. Shakespeare used these references so the readers could easily make the connection by using just one word instead of a big explanation.

  1. Great analysis. It's become a very common day to day thing to interpret everything through symbols and character references to describe the simples of things. It's as simple as pizza representing Italian culture and old unique forms of baking and creating an interesting.... pie-like food. I think all these instant references are like secret implanted, subliminal messages that humans have learned to instantly install into our brains. Sort of like downloading a bunch of data into your brain over the years and then when brought up in conversation we just sorta go through the mental file folders in our heads for perfect clarification... That's the way I see it.

  2. Really thought prokoking ideas. When we all understand a reference it is as if we have an immediate connection and understanding of a situation at a deeper level. When I say, "It's hotter than Hades in here!" you all recognize that it is quite possibly the hottest classroom in the school because we all understand the allusion. If we call a young man a narcissist, we all know exactly how self-absorbed he is in one word!
